The ravine is deep, and green most of the year, with a stream flowing through it. It winds through the residential areas of Burnaby, British Columbia. While lush and green are fooling you. Like so many of these small “natural” walkways through the city underneath is its real purpose. There is both a sewage and a high-pressure gas line. The walkway has scattered warnings about its true dangerous nature. On a quiet day, you can stand still and hear the gas flowing, and the sludge. It’s rather disheartening.
The fields in the rain.
Early this morning I went out to take some images. The rain, however, wouldn’t stop. Still there was something wonderful in the colours.
Another image from the shoreline on a day of forest fire smoke and haze.
The forest fires have been going on for a month or so, and with each shift in the wind new areas are filled with the smoke and haze. The wind seemed to change just as we arrived in Washington State.

The Photographer, today I drove from Vancouver to Bellingham, looking for something besides trees.

Looking down, into a small valley of homes, from here you see six or seven types of houses, repeating, in different order, different colour, with additions and in some cases subtractions, that more than anything else shows their common DNA.
Where the edge of the garden meets the woodlands.
Often my interest is in the transition of space (how does space become place?). These images are often found in the liminal edges of a space where the landscape transitions, sometimes from urban to suburban, sometime urban to woodland or forest. Here the garden, as place, bleeds into the woodland space, with a lone gardener working on transforming the land, slowly, but constantly, encroaching on another space.
