Early Morning Just Before the Rain

June 13, 2025 Jim Roche

Early morning, just before the rain, the wind and even the breeze stops for just a few moments and everything is still.

The fast spring growth has become the slow but steady development of a dense and impenetrable wall of green. The structure seems, over time, to have become less understandable, knowable. What is behind this green, knowable a few weeks ago, is secret now.

The Path Above the Lake

March 19, 2025 Jim Roche

There are two paths, one by the edge of the lake and one up the hill above the lake. Too often, this pathway has bears with cubs. They are unwilling to move, and you often have to walk backwards, away, to avoid a clash. This time of year the undergrowth is preparing for spring.

In The Winter Garden

February 7, 2025 Jim Roche

The cold has reached below zero, and the garden is empty as can be. Half-finished tasks wait to be completed. A pheasant, red ring, flies by unexpectedly and startles me. Small birds flutter from bush to bush, looking for any remaining seeds.
